In brief
A structural assessment establishes what the chimney supports, what remains and which measures are needed. Photographs support an enquiry but cannot replace assessment of concealed connections.

Give the engineer a clear brief
Explain what you want removed, which floors are involved and what must remain. Existing drawings, details of previous alterations and photographs help define the assessment. If information is incomplete, a site inspection or further investigation may be required. A single photograph does not replace assessment of concealed structures.
Distinguish assessment, calculations and execution
Not every enquiry needs the same document. A structural engineer determines the level of detail needed for the particular situation. We coordinate how existing reports or additional calculations will inform the work. Producing a calculation is included only when separately agreed as part of the scope.
Understand what the findings mean for your plans
The outcome can affect retained sections, work sequence, support measures and repairs. We discuss these implications before removal starts. If the actual construction differs from the assessment assumptions, it must be reassessed first. An alternative involving more or less removal may require a different solution.
Define rules and responsibilities
A structural alteration may require a permit. Local rules and a property's protected status may also be relevant. A calculation does not replace any necessary permit or co-owner consent. Include existing decisions and owners' association agreements with your enquiry. The quotation clarifies which assessment is available, who will arrange additional work and which tasks are priced.
Frequently asked questions
Will a steel beam always be necessary?
This cannot be established in advance. The appropriate solution depends on the existing structure, the proposed alteration and the structural engineer's assessment.
Can I send an existing structural calculation?
Yes. Include its date and the design it covers. Its assumptions must be checked against the current property and the work you are requesting.
