In brief
Flue removal starts by establishing which appliances and homes it serves. Materials, shared use and connections through floors and the roof determine the next steps.

The material and route matter
A metal liner needs a different assessment from a flue within masonry. Built-in or concealed sections can also affect the scope. Include photographs of the connections and every visible section. Explain how many floors are involved and whether other flues run alongside it.
Establish connections and shared use
An unused appliance in your property does not prove that the entire flue is inactive. In apartments or shared structures, the homes and installations served must be identified first. Disconnection or alteration of a working installation must be agreed with an appropriate specialist beforehand. Removal starts only once the relevant functions are understood.
If a gas appliance is connected or the flue is shared, establish which installation work is needed and who is qualified to carry it out. Where Dutch CO certification is required, the appointed business must hold it. Record which connections will remain in use.
Repair openings and the space left behind
Removing a pipe can leave openings that require building repairs. We discuss connections to floors, ceilings, walls and, where relevant, the roof. Fire separation may also need consideration. The quotation describes the agreed repairs; decorating, flooring and changes to installations are itemised separately.
Investigation and a suitable quotation
Older flue materials or surrounding boards may require testing. A construction date or photograph alone cannot establish whether asbestos is present. Costs depend on material, length, access, dismantling and repairs. Tell us the flue's original use and include any drawings or previous survey reports.
Frequently asked questions
Does this include removing the masonry chimney?
Not automatically. Removing an inner pipe and removing all the masonry are different scopes of work. We agree the boundaries before work starts.
Could the old flue later be used for ventilation?
That requires a separate assessment of the proposed installation and the condition of the flue. An existing opening does not by itself establish suitability.
