Consider the complete route
Collect information about fireplaces, stoves, boilers and previous alterations. In a shared building, ask which systems other residents use. It may be difficult to connect a roof outlet to a particular appliance indoors simply by looking at it.
Include installation details or service records if available. Use them to support the assessment, not as a reason to disconnect anything yourself.
Identify the appropriate installation specialist
Dutch certification rules apply to specified work on gas combustion installations and associated provisions. IPLO explains which activities are covered. Establish which qualified installer is needed if the proposal affects such a system. A demolition contract does not establish that the contractor is authorised to carry out the installation work.
Agree a clear handover
If an installation is altered, establish before demolition which parts have safely been taken out of use and which remain. Ask who will document this and coordinate questions between the installer and removal contractor. Do not let the stages proceed on assumptions alone.
Document what remains
Keep information on retained and altered routes with the property records. It will help with future maintenance. Information on shared systems should also be included in the VvE’s building records.
Frequently asked questions
The fireplace is unused. Does that mean the flue is free?
Not necessarily. Check the full route and any other users or functions.
Can I remove an old connection beforehand?
Do not act on an assumption. First establish its function and which professional needs to deal with it.
