In brief
Removing a fireplace surround concerns the visible enclosure in the room. The flue behind it and chimney above are separate elements whose relationship to the work needs assessment.

Define exactly what should be removed
A decorative surround, masonry hood and built-in appliance are separate elements. Tell us what should go and what should remain. Photographs of the whole wall, fireplace opening and room above help define the scope. Concealed services or other building elements may be present behind the finish.
Assess the appliance and masonry first
Tell us whether an appliance is still connected and what type it is. Appropriate arrangements must be made to take any installation safely out of service. If masonry above rests on the section being removed, a structural assessment is needed. Suspect boards or seals cannot be declared free of asbestos from their appearance.
Protection, waste removal and the intended finish
Discuss which furniture can be moved and which flooring needs protection. The route for removing rubble also affects the approach. Removal may reveal differences in floor level, wall finish or ceiling. The quotation sets out which areas will be repaired and which finishing work you will arrange separately.
A clear enquiry avoids misunderstandings
Provide the approximate width, height and depth of the surround, together with photographs. Materials, weight, access and the required finish affect the cost. If you also want the flue removed on other floors, say so at the outset. That way, the fireplace is considered as part of your wider plan.
Frequently asked questions
Will the flue remain in place?
Removal of the full flue is not included when only the fireplace surround is being removed. The condition and purpose of any retained sections still need to be considered.
Can the existing flooring be extended into the opening?
This depends on the available materials and the substrate. An invisible match cannot be guaranteed beforehand; discuss materials and finishing boundaries during assessment.
